💻Connect your device to a computer

Plug a Playtronica device into a Mac, Windows PC, iPhone, iPad, or Android phone.

Every Playtronica device is a class-compliant USB MIDI device. No drivers are required on Mac or Windows. Plug in the device and the operating system recognises it automatically.

On macOS

  1. Plug in the device with a USB cable. Use a USB-C to USB-A adapter if your Mac has no USB-C port.
  2. Verify in Audio MIDI Setup. Go to Applications → Utilities → Audio MIDI Setup. Click the MIDI Studio icon. Your Playtronica device should appear.
  3. Open your synth or DAW. The DAW detects the device automatically. In Ableton, check MIDI preferences. In Logic, the device appears automatically.

On Windows

  1. Plug in the device. Windows 10 and Windows 11 install a generic MIDI driver automatically. No manual driver installation is required.
  2. Check Device Manager. Right-click Start → Device Manager → Sound, video and game controllers. Your Playtronica device should appear in the list.
  3. Enable the MIDI input in your DAW. In Ableton, go to Options → Preferences → MIDI. In FL Studio, go to Options → MIDI Settings. Enable the Playtronica device as a MIDI input.

On iPhone or iPad

  1. Use a USB adapter. You will need Apple's Lightning to USB Camera Adapter, or a USB-C to USB-A adapter for newer iPads. These are not included in the box.
  2. Plug the adapter into your iPhone or iPad, then plug in your Playtronica device.
  3. Open GarageBand for iOS or Koala Sampler. Both apps detect USB MIDI devices automatically. Create a new track and play.

On Android

  1. Use a USB-C OTG adapter. Most modern Android phones support USB Host Mode through OTG. Check your phone's specifications.
  2. Connect the Playtronica device through the USB-C OTG adapter.
  3. Open a MIDI-compatible app. Koala Sampler (Android) and MIDI+BTLE are good starting points. Allow the app to access USB devices when prompted.

Ask the community

🤝 Other Playtronica users have probably hit this before. The Playtronica Friends Facebook group has 4,400 members and is the fastest source of creative and technical help. Search the group's history first (use the magnifying glass at the top — try playtron mobile no sound, all leds lit, touchme biotron no sound, koala sampler midi, or whatever fits your problem). If your question is not already answered, post a new one with a [Device] prefix in the title. See the community page for what to ask there and what to email instead.
