🦺Safety and health information

Playtronica devices are safe for typical creative use. This page explains the limits.

Playtronica devices connect the human body, objects, and sound through touch and low-voltage electricity. They are designed for artistic and educational use only. They are not medical or therapeutic devices. Read this page before using any Playtronica hardware.

⚠️ Do not use Playtronica devices if you have a pacemaker or an implanted medical device. Capacitive sensing and electromagnetic signals may interfere with such devices. If you are pregnant, avoid prolonged direct physical contact with Playtronica hardware. If in doubt, consult a healthcare professional.

General safety

  • Use each device only as described in its official documentation.
  • Use only the cables and power sources provided or approved by Playtronica.
  • Do not connect Playtronica devices to high-voltage equipment or untested third-party electronics.
  • Keep the devices away from water and extreme heat.
  • Do not open, modify, or repair the electronics yourself.
  • Children should use Playtronica devices only with adult supervision.

Electrical safety

All Playtronica devices run on low-voltage USB power. Do not connect them to unverified power supplies. Do not handle the devices with wet hands or while standing in water. Disconnect the device immediately if you feel any tingling sensation or notice unusual behaviour.

⚠️ Touch only the contacts shown in the device manuals. Each device has clearly defined contact points: the TouchMe pads, the Playtron alligator pins and the gold ground pin, the Biotron leaf-pad cables and light sensor face, the Orbita orbit ring, the central encoder, the side buttons, and every device's USB-C connector. Even when the device is unplugged, do not touch solder joints, exposed chips, or the underside of the PCB. Playtronica devices are durable, but touching those internal areas can cause permanent damage. Treat the surfaces you are not using like the inside of an open laptop — it is fine to know they are there, but there is no reason to touch them.

Environment

Use the devices in dry indoor spaces. Avoid condensation, water exposure, and conductive liquids. If a device becomes wet or damaged, disconnect it immediately.

If you integrate Playtronica into furniture, public spaces, or interactive installations, use appropriate insulation. See Creative and installations for guidance.

Intended use

Playtronica devices — TouchMe, Playtron, Biotron, Orbita, Scales, and Conductive Fabric Tape — are designed for creative expression, sound design, and education. They are not medical, diagnostic, or therapeutic devices.

Disposal

Dispose of the electronics according to your local e-waste recycling regulations. In the EU, the WEEE Directive applies. Do not put Playtronica devices in regular household waste.

Ask the community

🤝 Other Playtronica users have probably hit this before. The Playtronica Friends Facebook group has 4,400 members and is the fastest source of creative and technical help. Search the group's history first (use the magnifying glass at the top — try playtron mobile no sound, all leds lit, touchme biotron no sound, koala sampler midi, or whatever fits your problem). If your question is not already answered, post a new one with a [Device] prefix in the title. See the community page for what to ask there and what to email instead.
